What are NFTs, how can the technology be used for one’s creative work, what are the possibilities of value creation beyond digital works, and which inspiring examples of artists are already out there? Who earns from art and how can we create structures beyond the classical art system or market that establish a fair(r) involvement of all contributors? Are NFTs an opportunity for more participation?

The seminar offers an introduction to the media-present topic of NFTs, that is, non-exchangeable signs that offer new possibilities for artists and creatives. Marina Abramovic, Michael Wesely or Hito Steyerl are just a few of those who already use NFTs and extend their work through them.

Crap or opportunity: what are NFTs, how does the technology work, and what can they be used for in artistic contexts? The seminar provides insight into possibilities and promising opportunities. It addresses critical questions about NFTs and sheds light on how platforms work and on how digital artworks are created and sold. We will address how this technological development is changing the art market, will tackle critical questions related to digital ownership, or its shelf life, as well as will look at inspiring examples of creative utilization of this technology for one’s own work, and will discuss the possibilities of new value creation.
